Why volunteer?

Volunteering is extremly rewarding.
Whether you enjoy social interaction, or something quiet to keep you busy, we have roles that are suitable for all.
Fundraising

We are on the lookout for enthusiastic fundraising volunteers to assist with co-ordinating events, running fundraisers and organising donation stations. You will receive support from staff to ensure risk assessments, marketing and any other processes are in place.

Reminiscence Facilitators

One way of volunteering for us is to run sessions within your local community, this could include Hospitals*, Care Homes*, Day Centres, Libraries and any other suitable groups  . Running sessions can sometimes be a daunting prospect but with our training and continued support we aim to arm you with the tools in order to create a relaxed, fun and open environment for all those who attend your sessions.    *To facilitate sessions in health care settings additional training will apply.

Admin, Photography and Research Roles

We also need admin based volunteers to help from our central Southampton based office with a variety of general admin tasks. If your strengths lie with research, we have a role for you too! We have an ever-expanding collection which we create fact sheets and information guidance for our facilitators.

Another key part of our projects is photographing our fabulous collection, if you have an interest in photography or would like to learn some basics then this role would be perfect for you.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please don’t hesitate to get in contact for an informal discussion.
Meet Helen - Volunteer for The Memory Box Project

In 2018 I became a volunteer assisting with a weekly reminiscence session at the local hospital.  It wasn’t just the patients that benefitted from seeing a different face or to share their stories but I also learned a lot from everyone sharing their own personal memories.

During the pandemic volunteering became home based with research of the objects that had been photographed for the website.  Again, another very interesting volunteering role and worthwhile knowing that individuals and carers now have the opportunity to reminisce from the comfort of their own home.

Currently I am back in a sheltered housing scheme using the Memory Box Flash cards to assist with reminiscence sessions.  There are lovely clear photographs with good question prompts to keep the conversation flowing.

I can thoroughly recommend the Memory Box to volunteer for, very rewarding as well as interesting.  I’ve always been well supported and have made good friends with the team over the years.
